Advertising in the Real World

This is to all of my friends who work in other fields (doctors, lawyers, teachers, accountants, etc.) and read this blog to be supportive (and because I often question you to see if you read it thoroughly).  I know you often wonder EXACTLY what it is like at my job every day.

Here you go.

I think this vignette does a fantastic job of explaining what it is really like to work in the field of advertising right now.

Oh, you are going to call or email me later and tell me how funny that video is and secretly you will think that I am kidding.

I’m not.

This is really what it is like.

And to clients, current and potential, if (and when) you act like this, don’t be surprised to find this video waiting for you in your email inbox.

Seriously.

It really is right on. If we didn’t laugh, we’d cry.

  2. Jaci Russo says:

It just kills me. So true and so painful.

  3. Steve Hartley says:

As bad as this is, it's just part and parcel of an overall disrespect for advertising and marketing professionals. Clients (and employers) hire us because of our expertise and experience, then question everything we do and pick apart every strategy and tactic.

Can you imagine taking this approach with your accountant, or lawyer, or your plumber? < /rant>

That’s what I love about this video. Takes the comments they say to us and shows how crazy they sound in other situations.

  5. Andy says:

    So true…so funny.

  6. nikki says:

    omg so true , lol

  7. Nicole says:

    Very True!!

I like to compare advertising to my past abusive relationships - we stay in it because of those little moments of greatness. Next time I build a house, I’m going to just ask the contractor to “throw in a couple of extra bedrooms” free of charge. I mean, he’s already there building the house right? What’s 200 more square feet? C’mon…

  9. Lisa says:

Ha! That’s awesome, Trey. Why do they think advertising professionals fancy happy hours? It keeps us sane.

I like to comare my advertising career with my past dysfunctional relationships - I stay in it for those little moments of greatness that make the other days of pain disappear, or at least not seem as horrible. Next time I build a house, I’m going to ask my contractor to just go ahead and throw in a couple of extra bedrooms for free. I mean, while he’s already there, what’s a couple hundred extra square feet? C’mon…

Perfect video- this really is advertising in the real world.

Used to work at the movie theater–this video reminds of the time a customer wanted a refund after watching a movie, because he didn’t like it all too much. He got pretty upset when I told them that I couldn’t give him a refund for a bad movie. I think it was Gone In 60 Seconds, which, by the way, is a great movie starring Giovanni Ribisi.

  14. Ah!!! at last I found what I was looking for. Somtimes it takes so much effort to find even tiny useful piece of information.
    Nice post. Thanks
